Onimusha: Way of the Sword Weapons, Oni Armaments & Souls
Updated August 26, 2026 · Facts cross-checked against the sources listed below
The katana: your one true weapon
Musashi carries a single katana with switchable one-handed and two-handed stances ⚠ single source. No second standing weapon — no great-sword, no permanent dual blades — has been shown in any official material or press build. That focus is deliberate: the whole combat system, from parries to Issen, is built around reading duels with one blade. In a preview build, sword upgrades raised three stats — Attack Power, Issen Power and Armament Power ⚠ preview build, may change.
The four Oni Armaments
The gauntlet’s spirit weapons are summons, not loadout items: activating one spends the Oni Power gauge (charged by blue souls) for a limited-time transformation of your offense.
| Armament | Form | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Two Celestials | Twin blades | A burst of very fast strikes; hits generate yellow souls, making it the panic-heal option at low HP |
| Earth-Shakers | Paired hammers | Chargeable smashes that crush shields and armor and wreck enemy stamina — the Break Issen setup tool |
| Wind-Whipper | Double-headed glaive | Overhead spin creating a whirlwind — crowd knockback, projectile cover, and fire-infused burns near flames |
| Oni Bow | Spirit bow | Ranged option with charge shots and its own upgrade track; Switch 2 supports Joy-Con 2 motion aiming ⚠ store listing |
The demo showcases the Two Celestials; whether the other three appear in the updated demo build is unconfirmed.
Souls: the three-color economy
- Red souls — currency. Spent on gear upgrades and learning or leveling skills.
- Yellow souls — healing. Your mid-fight recovery, which is why Two Celestials doubles as a lifeline.
- Blue souls — Oni Power. Fuel for the four Armaments above, and Blazing State makes your attacks produce more of them.
Absorption is manual and positional: hold L2/LT and the gauntlet drinks. You can walk while absorbing — a modernization the developers call out — but you cannot guard, so the discipline is vacuuming between enemy strings, not during them.
The Oni Gauntlet: weapon, character, progression system
The gauntlet on Musashi’s left arm houses a talking spirit — the Oni Lady, who narrates and, per Game Informer, objects to being called “Gauntlet Lady” (more on her on the characters page). Mechanically it is the progression spine: absorbing souls unlocks Armaments and three Oni powers — Oni Strength (smash barriers and obstacles), Oni Agility (explosive jumps, wall traversal) and Oni Vision (reveal what human eyes can’t, highlight interactables). Story-wise the gauntlet is slowly corrupting its bearer, and Musashi wants it off his arm — the tension driving the plot.
Growth systems beyond the blade
From RPG Site’s preview build ⚠ single source, pre-release build: clothing upgrades raise HP and stamina (costing money plus gathered materials), gauntlet upgrades speed and widen soul absorption, and Oni Vision, Blazing State, the bow, assassination and stealth each have linear upgrade tracks. Charms sit on top as equippable passives — the known list spans the demo reward (Kubi Akari), early-purchase items (Lion Dog, White Monkey — see editions) and the Deluxe kits (Oni Lady, Little Dancer, Mentor).
There is no traditional armor-stat system announced — outfits and sword skins are explicitly cosmetic. And to repeat the header because launch-week search will be full of it: no Oni Form transformation has been announced. The parry-built Blazing State buff is the only confirmed empowered state. Environmental violence rounds it out: flipped tables as improvised cover, carts shoved into enemies, and blade-lock clashes won by mashing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an Oni Form or demon transformation?
Nothing announced. Official material describes no transformation; the closest confirmed mechanic is Blazing State, a parry-built buff that raises attack power. Sites listing an “Oni Form” ahead of launch are fabricating — treat any such page with suspicion.
Can I play the whole game with the Oni weapons?
No — unlike classic Onimusha, Oni Armaments are not standing weapons. They are limited-duration summons that drain the Oni Power gauge charged by blue souls; the katana is your permanent weapon.
What do the three soul colors do?
Red souls are currency for upgrades and skills, yellow souls restore health, and blue souls charge the Oni Power gauge that fuels Oni Armaments. Absorption is manual (hold L2/LT), works while moving, but leaves you unable to guard.
What are charms?
Equippable passives managed from the Equipment menu — Capcom says they “strengthen Musashi’s abilities.” Known charms come from the demo save reward (Kubi Akari), early-purchase bonus (Lion Dog, White Monkey) and the Deluxe editions. Exact numbers are unannounced.
