Onimusha: Way of the Sword Collectibles — All 275 by Area
Updated September 23, 2026 · Facts cross-checked against the sources listed below
The 275, by category
| Category | Count | Trophy | What gates it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lion Dogs | 36 | For the Love of Dog (silver) | Locked until you finish “What Lurks in the Shadows”; dogs in a later map only appear once that map is liberated and its boss is beaten |
| Genma Notes | 23 | Genma-ologist (bronze) | The only category the map does not mark on its own; #23 is post-story (see below) |
| Chance Encounters | 18 | No Job Too Small (silver) | Side jobs from NPCs, unlocked mission by mission; Hidden Treasures 1–5 are five of these |
| Mysteries of Kyoto | 8 | Demystified (silver) | Locked until “What Lurks in the Shadows”; two chain into each other |
| Oni Armaments | 7 | Oni Armory (silver) | Six armaments plus the Oni Bow — PowerPyx counts seven, most guides say six |
| Hozuki Pouches | 9 | Medical Marvel (silver) | Healing-item capacity, not charm slots |
| Charms | 15 | Charmed Life (silver) | World charms only; the six bonus charms are not counted |
| Power Stones | 54 | Well-Rounded (silver) | Basic-skill currency — enough in one run to max everything |
| Oni Stones | 55 or 54 | Well-Rounded (silver) | The one disputed count: PowerPyx lists 55, the Japanese Gamerch wiki 54 — see below. Special-skill / armament currency; not enough in one run; recollect in NG+ |
| Fine Silk Cloths | 25 | Dressed to Kill (silver) | Equipment upgrade material |
| Tamahagane | 25 | Dressed to Kill (silver) | Equipment upgrade material |
Eleven rows, 275 items. Three of them are not really “collectibles” in the pick-it-up sense — Chance Encounters and Mysteries are side activities, and Oni Armaments are story rewards — but the trophy list treats them as checklists, so PowerPyx counts them and so do we. The two Well-Rounded rows are the same trophy from two currencies; Dressed to Kill likewise.
Which zones hold what
Nobody has published one table with every count per zone, and we are not going to invent one — PowerPyx organises by category and only splits stones and Lion Dogs by area. What the per-area headings do establish:
- Power Stones are spread over Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Eastern Kyoto, the Underground Laboratory, Mount Oe and Arashiyama.
- Oni Stones sit in Eastern Kyoto, the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Mount Oe, Arashiyama and Shanaoh Castle — note the late-game weighting, which is half the reason a first run comes up short.
- Lion Dogs are grouped into five areas: Kiyomizu-dera, Nijo-jo Castle, Eastern Kyoto, Mount Oe and Arashiyama, with the Eastern Kyoto hub holding the largest share.
- All five Hidden Treasures, and most Chance Encounters and Mysteries, are in the Eastern Kyoto hub — the open town is where the side content lives.
The zone names you will see across guides, with their spelling variants: Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Oni Refuge, Depths – Kiyomizu-dera, Eastern Kyoto, Nijo-jo Castle, Underground Laboratory, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Mount Oe, Arashiyama, and Shanaoh Castle (PowerPyx spells it “Shanoah”).
Hidden Treasures 1–5 and the Old Drawings
These are the five Chance Encounters that start with an NPC handing you an Old Drawing — VGC notes it “looks more like a photograph” — of a spot in Eastern Kyoto. Three guides agree on every location; the chest contents come from Power Up Gaming alone.
| Treasure | Where | Unlocks | Reward ⚠ single source |
|---|---|---|---|
| No. 1 | Rooftop near the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope mirror — two ladders up | After “A Tempest at the Temple” | Fine Silk Cloth + 2 Oni Stones |
| No. 2 | Bottom of the small waterfall west of the Yasaka Pagoda mirror | After “To Live is to Suffer” | Fine Silk Cloth + Oni Stones |
| No. 3 | Garden gate near the Kamo River – East mirror; the drawing comes from a woman west of the Shijo Street mirror | After “Okuni’s Kabuki Dance” | Fine Silk Cloth + 2 Power Stones |
| No. 4 | Left balcony of the shrine-like building north-east of the Gojo Street – East mirror | After “The Demon on the Mount” | Fine Silk Cloth + 2 Power Stones + a Tamahagane |
| No. 5 | Upper level of the Yasaka Pagoda, south side | After “In the Light of an Icy Moon” | Fine Silk Cloth + 2 Oni Stones + a Skeleton Hozuki |
Two of those reward lines are worth flagging because the most-cited English list omits them: No. 4 also pays a Tamahagane, and No. 5 a Skeleton Hozuki — the item the Medical Marvel trophy wants. Both are confirmed by a Japanese quest database and an English trophy guide independently. Every other Chance Encounter and its reward is on the missions and side quests page.
The unlock column follows PowerPyx’s per-treasure gating; Power Up Gaming instead says the set “becomes available once you reach” the mission “To Live is to Suffer” ⚠ CONFLICT — the two gating accounts differ; PowerPyx is the more granular. If a drawing has not been offered yet, advance the story rather than searching.
Lion Dogs: 36, and why yours will not spawn yet
The most-searched category, and the one with the most confused players, because the game hides the whole set behind a mid-game mission. PowerPyx is explicit: the dogs “aren’t unlocked until completing ‘What Lurks in the Shadows’”, and for maps other than the one you are in, they “will not spawn there until the entire map has been liberated and the final boss of that map has been defeated.” So an empty map early on is not a bug. Every six dogs unlock a skin — Sakurahime at 6, Shishioh at 12, Myogo at 18, Ura-giri at 24, Mooncrossed at 30, Kikoku at 36 — a threshold list now confirmed by two guides; the full cosmetics picture is on the costumes page. Do not confuse the dogs with the Lion Dog charm: that is the pre-order bonus charm (follow-up attack power up), unrelated to the count.
Genma Notes: 23, unmarked, one after the credits
PowerPyx calls Genma Notes “the only collectibles that won’t be marked naturally on the map,” which is why they are the category people finish last. Twenty-two are available during the story. The twenty-third is the game’s single post-story pickup:
Show where Genma Note #23 is (names the final boss)
After defeating Minamoto no Yoshitsune, reload your save and go to the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple in Eastern Kyoto — the note is there. That well is, as far as we can tell, what the “well” searches are about.
Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters: 8 + 18
Both sets are side activities, both are gated by story progress, and both count toward trophies. The eight Mysteries are locked until “What Lurks in the Shadows”: The Light of Vengeance; A Wife’s Prayer; Something in the Water; The Blessed Man; The Night Parade; The Faceless; The Three Worms [Worm-ly Ways]; and Hanging Monkeys [Some Unfinished Monkey Business] — the last requires the one before it. Charms are among the rewards: Maxroll credits the Blazing Charm to Worm-ly Ways and the Oni Strength Charm to Some Unfinished Monkey Business.
The eighteen Chance Encounters arrive in waves as missions complete: Pale Lights in a Night Sky; Clear Space, Clear Mind; five Ace Archer challenges (one per region — Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Nijo-jo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Mount Oe, Arashiyama); The Growling Ghost; the five Hidden Treasures above; An Ugly Business; Noisy Neighbors; The Odd Couples; A Fishy Story; and Restless Spirits (which rewards the Charm of Oni Power). PowerPyx lists the unlocking mission for each.
Stones, cloth and steel: the 158 or 159 upgrade materials
More than half the count is currency. 54 Power Stones buy Basic skills, and PowerPyx says you can find enough in one playthrough to upgrade everything. 55 Oni Stones — or 54; see the count note at the top — buy Special skills — the armament upgrades — and here the same guide is blunt: you will not find enough Oni Stones in one playthrough to fully upgrade the Oni Gauntlet; skills carry into NG+ and the stones respawn to be collected again. That is why GamesRadar’s reassurance that “only early improvements require these rare stones” reads differently from PowerPyx’s per-skill costs of two to three stones each ⚠ CONFLICT — we present both; the completionist experience matches PowerPyx. PowerPyx’s own advice for collectors: spend your first Oni Stones on Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2 and Oni Vision: Search Range before anything else. 25 Fine Silk Cloths and 25 Tamahagane upgrade clothing and the sword at the Spirit Mirror; both are finite world pickups, and both feed the Dressed to Kill trophy. Which armament to spend on first is argued out on the weapons page.
Charms: 15 to find, 21 named, 3 slots
The trophy counts 15 world charms. On top of those sit six bonus charms — Kubi Akari from the demo save, Lion Dog and White Monkey from early purchase, and Oni Lady, Little Dancer and Mentor from the Deluxe editions — for 21 named in total. Maxroll’s guide says “22” in one sentence and “16 to find” in another, but its own table lists 21, so 15 + 6 is the safe count ⚠ Maxroll’s prose and table disagree. Slots: one at the start, then Charm Capacity 1 (after the first Oni Portal, 2 Power Stones) and Charm Capacity 2 (after the third, 3 Power Stones) for a maximum of three — Maxroll and PowerPyx agree, and the “four slots” figure on AI guide sites matches neither. Each charm’s effect, the quest that awards it and what upgrading all fifteen costs are on the charms page.
Is there an interactive map?
Not a complete one, a week after launch. This is the current state of every map source we could verify, so you do not have to click through them all:
| Source | Status on September 17 |
|---|---|
| MapGenie | All nine zones live: Arashiyama and Shanaoh Castle lost their “Under Construction” tags between our September 16 and September 17 checks, joining Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Oni Refuge, Eastern Kyoto, Nijo-jo Castle, the Underground Laboratory, Kyoto Imperial Palace and Mount Oe (which opened September 14). Still nothing for the Depths. |
| IGN | Nine interactive maps: Shanaoh Castle went up on September 16, a day after Arashiyama, so IGN and MapGenie now cover the same nine zones and neither has the Depths. Its walkthrough covers all 25 missions and its hub was refreshed on September 16 with a difficulty breakdown, but it still carries no bug or known-issue coverage at all. |
| Maxroll | Walkthrough complete, and side content keeps arriving: the Ace Archer challenge and the Sasaki Ganryu Altered boss (September 14), an all-treasure-locations guide (September 15), and on September 16 an enhancement guide plus a Genma Note locations page (23 notes). The Database and Map entries in its own navigation still read “coming soon”. |
| PowerPyx | No map — but the most complete text lists: every category on its own page, stones and Lion Dogs grouped by area. |
| Game8 | The English hub is still not live (404 on day eight); the Japanese site has a map-list page. |
| AppMedia (Japanese) | A zone-by-zone map list plus Lion Dog, Genma Note and hidden-treasure pages — the best non-English coverage. |
We are not building a map of our own — there is no marker data to build it from that is not someone else’s — but we will update this table the day one of these fills in the missing zones.
Point of no return, and what NG+ does to the count
You can free-roam and collect everything “up until the Point of No Return before the final mission ‘The Clash At Rendaino’” (PowerPyx’s spelling; Maxroll writes “Rendiano”), and the post-credits Continue puts you back before that mission with the map open, which is why the trophy guide lists zero missables. New Game+ keeps your skills and resets the stones on the map, so a second run is where the last Oni Stone upgrades — and the Carnage difficulty reward — come from. The full carry-over table is on the trophy page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many collectibles are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
275, across eleven categories: 36 Lion Dogs, 23 Genma Notes, 18 Chance Encounters, 8 Mysteries of Kyoto, 7 Oni Armaments, 9 Hozuki Pouches, 15 Charms, 54 Power Stones, 55 Oni Stones, 25 Fine Silk Cloths and 25 Tamahagane. That is PowerPyx’s count from a finished playthrough, and the categories sum to it. PowerPyx revised its Oni Stone line from 54 to 55 in mid-September, which is what moved the total from 274 — the figure this page carried until September 16. Pages quoting 273 are short either way. The one independent per-stone list, on the Japanese Gamerch wiki, still counts 54 Oni Stones, which would make the total 274 — so until one side finds or drops the disputed stone, the answer is 274 or 275.
Is there an interactive map for Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Yes — two of them, as of September 17. MapGenie has all nine zones live: Arashiyama and Shanaoh Castle lost their “Under Construction” tags between September 16 and 17, after Mount Oe opened on September 14. IGN added Shanaoh Castle on September 16 to reach the same nine. The Depths still has no map on either, and Maxroll’s planned map still says “coming soon” — for the Depths, PowerPyx’s per-area text lists remain the only locator.
Are any collectibles missable?
No. You can free-roam and collect everything up to the point of no return before the final mission, “The Clash at Rendaino”, and finishing the game drops you back before that point with the whole map open. The one thing that looks missable is Genma Note #23, which cannot be picked up until after the final boss — reload your save after the credits and it is waiting.
Why are there no Lion Dogs on my map?
Because they are gated twice. None of the 36 appear until you have completed the main mission “What Lurks in the Shadows”; after that, the dogs belonging to a map only spawn once that map has been fully liberated and its final boss defeated. Collecting them in sixes unlocks the six Lion Dog skins — Sakurahime, Shishioh, Myogo, Ura-giri, Mooncrossed and Kikoku. The “Lion Dog charm” people also search for is a different thing: a pre-order bonus charm that boosts follow-up attack power.
Where is Hidden Treasure No. 3?
Behind a garden gate near the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror in Eastern Kyoto; the Chance Encounter that starts it — a woman west of the Shijo Street mirror handing you Old Drawing No. 3 — unlocks after “Okuni’s Kabuki Dance”. Three guides (VGC, GameRant, Power Up Gaming) agree on the spot; the reward, a Fine Silk Cloth and two Power Stones, is reported by Power Up Gaming alone.
What is “Worm-ly Ways” in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
The seventh Mystery of Kyoto, listed in-game as “The Three Worms [Worm-ly Ways]” — the autocomplete spelling “worm-my ways” is a typo of it. It is in Eastern Kyoto, unlocks after “Okuni’s Kabuki Dance”, rewards the Blazing Charm, and is a prerequisite for the eighth Mystery, “Hanging Monkeys [Some Unfinished Monkey Business]”. Only PowerPyx walks it in detail.
What is the well everyone is searching for?
Almost certainly the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple in Eastern Kyoto: it is where Genma Note #23 — the only post-story collectible — appears once you reload your save after the final boss. No guide describes a “well puzzle” as such, so if you are looking for a mechanical puzzle at a well you may be chasing the wrong thing; the other “well” in the game is the Well-Rounded trophy for upgrading every skill. That reading is our inference from the search term, not something a source states.
Do collectibles carry into New Game+?
Skills you bought with stones carry over, and that is the point: PowerPyx notes you cannot find enough Oni Stones in one playthrough to fully upgrade the Oni Gauntlet, so the last armament upgrades come from collecting the stones again in NG+. Power Stones, by contrast, are sufficient in a single run. Equipment enhancements and Red Souls reset, so spend souls before you cross.
