How appearance-changing works

Every cosmetic routes through the Spirit Mirror. One menu — Change Appearance — covers four slots for Musashi: outfit, haori (the over-garment), sword appearance (which also restyles the wakizashi) and the Oni Gauntlet’s skin; the same menu restyles Shizuka and Okuni. It opens after “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu,” the early Kiyomizu-dera mission. Paid DLC and the free collaboration outfits are collected once from Additional Content at the same mirror, then equipped like anything else. Locked slots display their own unlock conditions, so your own menu doubles as a checklist. Two things cosmetics are not: they are not a stat layer — that is charms and equipment enhancements — and some outfits (Tasuki Sash, Panda, Wataru-kun) simply cannot be worn with a haori.

The haori are the story’s pacing device: one arrives after each of six specific missions, in the order you play them, so none can be missed. Every one has a Carnage twin.

Sword appearances — 14

Two of the paid skins are nods worth knowing: Maxroll notes that Raizan and Enryuu reference Samanosuke’s weapons from the original Onimusha: Warlords, and the Whittled Oar is the historical Musashi’s famous duelling weapon ⚠ the references are Maxroll’s reading.

Gauntlet skins — 2

The Oni Gauntlet you are given is the default; the only alternative is Crimson Lotus, from the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe tiers. Nothing in-game unlocks a gauntlet skin — every guide agrees, and GameRant says so explicitly.

Shizuka and Okuni — eight outfits, two of them free

The Premium Deluxe tier carries three outfits each: for Okuni, Flower Dance, Goldfish Dance and Oni Dance; for the Oni Lady, Bird Call, Snow Camellia and Elegance. The other two cost nothing: on September 7 Capcom released a free Monster Hunter Rise collaboration — the Oni Lady’s “Hinoa” outfit, modelled on the village receptionist, and Okuni’s “Yomogi’s Dance,” modelled on the tea-shop girl. Both are visual only, both are claimed from Additional Content, and both sit in Steam’s DLC list under exactly those names ⚠ GAME Watch’s report plus the Steam app records; no English outlet has covered the collaboration.

The two cosmetics that change how the game plays

Both are Carnage rewards, and both were single-source rumours a week ago. The Bishamon Sword — the series’ legendary blade, unlocked by finishing the story on Carnage — makes Issen dramatically easier to land, close to how it feels during Oni Awakening; Maxroll, GameRant, MapMaster and AppMedia now all say so, and GameRant’s own September 16 update supersedes its earlier line that every katana is purely cosmetic. Warlord’s Armor 2 — every Boss Rematch cleared on Carnage — makes the gauntlet absorb nearby souls automatically, which Maxroll singles out against bosses that steal souls for themselves. Maxroll’s advice for the Carnage rematches, which it calls “no joke”: get the sword first, then go for the armor.

Where the guides disagree

• Tasuki Sash: IGN, GameRant and our mission rewards table say “Kyoto, Corrupted”; Maxroll says the mission before it. They are back to back, so either way it is yours in the first hour.
• The 12-dog milestone: four guides give one skin per six rescues; MapMaster’s tracker lists Shishioh and Myogo both at 12. We follow the majority.
• Edition labels: IGN files the Deluxe-tier skins under “Premium or Premium Deluxe.” Capcom’s own products page — and Maxroll, RPG Site and Power Up Gaming — put White Lion, the four Deluxe swords, Red Armor and Crimson Lotus in the Deluxe tier; the three haori and the companion outfits are Premium Deluxe. • How many there are: Maxroll counts 43 for Musashi; MapMaster says it has catalogued 37 “confirmed” items. The gap is which DLC and Carnage variants each includes, not a disagreement about any single unlock.

Corrections, on the record

September 21. Until today this page said the reward for clearing every Boss Rematch was the “Master Outfit.” That was our misreading of one unlockables list. The rematch reward is Warlord’s Armor; Master’s Garb is the outfit for finishing the story. Three guides now agree on each, and the table above is corrected in place.

Earlier. On launch day this page called the panda suit unverified and “almost certainly recycled” from Onimusha: Warlords. The claim was right and our caution was wrong: the Panda Costume is a real completion unlock, now documented by four guides with its in-game description. What we keep from that episode is the confusable pair — “Bamboo & Panda” is a paid Deluxe sword skin; the Panda Costume is the free post-game outfit.
