Onimusha: Way of the Sword Charms — All 21 & Where to Get Each
Updated September 28, 2026 · Facts cross-checked against the sources listed below
All 15 charms you can find
Every row below is checked against three independent lists — PowerPyx, Maxroll and the Japanese guide site AppMedia — and all three agree on where each of the 15 charms comes from. The effects come from Maxroll (all three levels) and AppMedia (level 1 and level 3). The two agree on the end points of every charm except one, the Charm of Stamina. The middle values come from Maxroll alone. The Japanese names are here because the in-game text is what settles translation disputes.
| Charm | Effect (Lv 1 / 2 / 3) | How to get it |

| Sadist’s Strength Charm 剛力の御守【追打】 | Attack power against enemies suffering an ailment +8 / 11 / 15% Maxroll’s English says “when suffering from ailments”; the Japanese text says the enemy is the one ailing — see below | Chance Encounter “Clear Space, Clear Mind” |
| Charm of Purification 浄化の御守 | Health lost to Malice −20 / 30 / 40% | Mystery of Kyoto “The Blessed Man” |

| Charm of Stamina 力動の御守 | Stamina recovery speed: +9 / 13 / 17% (Maxroll, Beebom, TechWiser) or +10 / 15 / 20% (AppMedia, VGTimes) The one charm whose numbers the sources disagree on | Chance Encounter “The Growling Ghost” (after “A Tempest at the Temple”) |

The Chance Encounters and Mysteries that pay these, with their full reward lists and the missions that unlock them, are on the missions page. The Mysteries only open after “What Lurks in the Shadows”, and you can clean up anything you missed until the point of no return before the final mission.
Two things the guides get wrong
The Sadist’s Strength Charm boosts damage to ailing enemies, not damage while you are ailing. Maxroll’s table reads “Attack Power when Suffering from Ailments”, which sounds like a charm for fighting while poisoned. The Japanese text is 「状態異常中の敵に対する攻撃の威力」: attack power against enemies that have a status ailment. That makes it a partner for anything that inflicts ailments. The Little Dancer bonus charm, which lengthens enemy ailments, is one example.
The count is 21, not 22. Maxroll’s summary says “16 charms to find, 1 from completing the demo, and 5 more available via DLC”. That adds up to 22, but the table on the same page lists 15 world charms and six bonus ones. PowerPyx, Power Up Gaming, AppMedia and the trophy all say 15 world charms.
The one open number is the Charm of Stamina. Maxroll gives stamina recovery +9 / 13 / 17%, and so do Beebom’s list (checked September 24) and TechWiser’s table (checked September 28). AppMedia gives +10% to +20%, and VGTimes gives +10 / 15 / 20%; OSLink gives only the first level, +10%. That is a three-to-two split with a third source on the 10% side, and the split is exactly one point per level. Guides this close may be copying one another, and nobody on either side shows a screenshot of the in-game number, so we still list both. ⚠ six sources, split three to three counting OSLink, no screenshot
The six bonus charms
These are not counted by the Charmed Life trophy, and you do not need them to finish anything. You claim each one at a Spirit Mirror under Additional Content. The effects here are Maxroll’s. The Japanese lists skip the bonus charms, so these numbers have no second source. ⚠ single source for the effects
| Charm | Effect (Lv 1 / 2 / 3) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable Charm: Kubi Akari | Soul absorption trigger boost +10 / 15 / 20% | Free with a demo save: Settings → Privacy → Demo Bonus → Collect Reward, then claim at a Spirit Mirror under Additional Content |
| Lovable Charm: Lion Dog | Follow-up attack power (after a parry or Reflex dodge) +25 / 37 / 50% | Early Adopter Bonus, every edition — the window closed September 24 (consoles, Windows) and September 25 (Steam, Epic) |
| Lovable Charm: White Monkey | Stamina lost when hit −10 / 15 / 20% | Early Adopter Bonus, Deluxe and Premium Deluxe only — window closed September 24–25 |
| Lovable Charm: Oni Lady | Special skill attack power +5 / 7 / 10% | Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions |
| Lovable Charm: Little Dancer | Enemy status ailment duration +15 / 22 / 30% | Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions |
| Lovable Charm: Mentor | Blazing State power +5 / 7 / 10% | Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions |
The Lion Dog window has closed. Capcom’s early purchase bonus ended on September 24 at 11:59 PM local time on PS5, Xbox, Windows and Switch 2, and on September 25 at 4:59 PM PDT on Steam and Epic. The Steam listing still carried the bonus on the morning of September 24; by September 28 the Early Adopter section was gone from the page. If you bought after the cutoff you do not have Lion Dog or White Monkey, and nothing else in the game replaces them. Lion Dog is the strongest bonus charm on paper: +50% follow-up attack power at level 3, after a parry or Reflex dodge. Maxroll calls it most useful early and on Carnage. Before it was removed, the Steam listing said the bonus content “may also become available at a later date”. As of September 28 Capcom has given no date or price for that, so treat it as possible, not announced. The dates and edition contents are on the editions page. The Kubi Akari claim steps, with Capcom’s own wording, are on the demo page.
Best charms: where the three guides agree
Three guides rank the charms: Maxroll, Power Up Gaming’s tier list, and AppMedia’s recommended loadouts. Laid side by side, they agree more than a tier list suggests.
| Pick | Maxroll | Power Up Gaming | AppMedia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charm of Awakening | Stand-out pick | S tier | General loadout |
| Charm of Oni Power | Stand-out pick | S tier | General loadout |
| Fencer’s Strength Charm | Not singled out | S tier | General loadout |
| Blazing Charm | Stand-out pick | A tier | — |
| Healer / Protection | Protection as a niche pick | S tier (both) | Defensive loadout, with Stamina |
| Reaper’s + Enticement | Soul farming, plus Kubi Akari | Reaper’s A, Enticement C | Red soul farming |
Awakening and Oni Power are the consensus, and AppMedia explains why. Those two gauges fill only by absorbing souls, so a faster fill rate is the only lever you have on them. The Charm of Oni Power feeds the Oni Armaments, and the Charm of Awakening feeds the transformation. A player asked on Steam on September 22 what the difference was, and that is the answer. For the third slot, take the Fencer’s Strength Charm for regular attacks (+15% at level 3) or the Blazing Charm (+6 seconds) if your game is built on deflects. For a boss that is beating you, AppMedia’s defensive loadout is Healer, Stamina and Protection. Power Up Gaming rates Healer and Protection S tier, and Maxroll suggests Stamina and Protection while you learn a fight. How the Oni Armaments themselves compare is on the weapons page.
Slots, upgrades and what it costs
- Slots: one at the start. Charm Capacity 1 (after the first Oni Portal, 2 Power Stones) and Charm Capacity 2 (after the third, 3 Power Stones) are the rightmost Basic skills. Three is the cap. The “four slots” figure on some AI guide sites matches none of the sources.
- Where to upgrade: the shrine in the southeast corner of Enma’s Hall, at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple in Eastern Kyoto. Choose Make Offering. It opens after “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu”.
- What it costs: red souls plus Favor. Favor comes from offering items, which you find glowing on the ground and in small chests, get from citizens you rescue from Genma, or buy from the merchant. PowerPyx gives every charm the same price: level 2 costs 3,000 red souls + 3,500 Favor, and level 3 costs 6,000 + 6,500. That is 135,000 red souls and 150,000 Favor to max all 15. ⚠ single source; its text writes the second level-3 cost as red souls, but its own totals only add up if it is Favor. Red soul farming is covered on the materials page.
- Charmed Life trophy: find and fully upgrade all 15 world charms. None of the bonus charms are needed.
- New Game+: the charms you have collected, and their levels, carry over. What resets is your outfit, sword and gauntlet upgrades, your red souls, and all the side-quest progress. Three sources agree on the charm line: GameRant, Power Up Gaming and AppMedia’s carry-over table.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many charms are in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
21: fifteen found in the game, which is what the Charmed Life trophy counts, plus six bonus charms — Kubi Akari from the demo save, Lion Dog and White Monkey from the early-purchase bonus, and Oni Lady, Little Dancer and Mentor from the Deluxe editions. Maxroll’s guide says 22 in its summary, but its own table lists 21.
What is the best charm loadout?
Charm of Awakening plus Charm of Oni Power is the one pairing all three ranking guides (Maxroll, Power Up Gaming and the Japanese site AppMedia) agree on, because those two gauges only fill from absorbing souls. For the third slot, AppMedia and Power Up Gaming pick the Fencer’s Strength Charm (+15% regular attack at level 3); Maxroll picks the Blazing Charm. For a hard boss, AppMedia’s defensive set is Healer, Stamina and Protection.
What is the difference between the Charm of Awakening and the Charm of Oni Power?
They feed different gauges. The Charm of Awakening fills the Awakening gauge faster — the Onimusha transformation. The Charm of Oni Power fills the Oni Power gauge faster — the one your Oni Armaments, the golden weapons, spend. Both are +4 / 6 / 8% by level, and most guides equip them together.
How do you get more charm slots?
Buy Charm Capacity 1 and Charm Capacity 2, the rightmost nodes of the Basic skill tree, with Power Stones. The first opens after the first Oni Portal (2 Power Stones), the second after the third (3 Power Stones). Three slots is the maximum.
How do you upgrade charms?
At the shrine in the southeast corner of Enma’s Hall, at Rokudo-chinnoji Temple in Eastern Kyoto — choose Make Offering. It opens after “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu” and costs red souls plus Favor, which you get by offering items you find glowing on the ground, in small chests, from citizens you save from Genma, or from the merchant. PowerPyx puts level 2 at 3,000 red souls and 3,500 Favor, and level 3 at 6,000 and 6,500.
Do charms carry over into New Game+?
Yes — both the charms you collected and their enhancement levels. GameRant, Power Up Gaming and AppMedia’s carry-over table all say so. What resets is your outfit, sword and gauntlet upgrades, your red souls and the side-quest progress, and players on Steam confirm the weapon and gauntlet reset. So the charm grind is a one-time cost, and red souls left over at the end are best spent on charms before you start NG+.
